Are you looking for a New Year’s Resolution this year, that you actually want to keep?! Volunteering is an amazing way to give something back and gives you so much more in return. Whether you want to gain new skills, get fresh air and exercise, build your confidence, add to your CV, help a cause you believe in or just do something different, volunteering can tick all of these boxes and more!
To help you find the right organisation and role for you, the Wokingham Volunteer Centre will be hosting a Volunteer Recruitment Fair at the Wokingham Town Hall on Saturday 28th January from 10am-1pm. The event is free to the general public and no booking is required, please just drop in for an informal chat with local charities. The charities attending are very varied, as are the roles, which can fit around work, family and other commitments. Those organisations who have already confirmed are:
The Link Visiting Scheme (which provides befrienders for elderly people who have become isolated); The Wokingham and Earley Transport Scheme (which provides volunteers drivers for transport for elderly clients for medical appointments and social trips); ABC to Read (which provides trained volunteers to local schools to read with primary school children); Cianna’s Smile (supporting families living with Sickle Cell Anaemia); Green ‘n’ Tidy Gardening Scheme (which provides volunteer gardeners for those who are elderly and vulnerable); SAFE (which supports rescue and re-homes abandoned and neglected horses in the local area); Berkshire Lowland Search and Rescue (which provides trained volunteers to search for high risk vulnerable missing persons); First Days (who support families who are living with a low income or are experiencing financial hardship); Ravenswood (which provides support for those living with learning disabilities); WADE (a day care centre for the elderly in Wokingham); WBC Library Service (which runs the libraries across the Borough and provides activities, events and reading groups for all ages); and Wokingham Guides (which provides support and activities for girls and young women at groups across the Borough).
